Modern Oklahoma has its origins in the relocation of Native Americans from the eastern USA during the 19th century. The Choctaw Nation (later Indian Territory) was the name given to the land where the so-called "Trail of Tears" ended. As the 19th century drew to a close, white settlers came in and eventually federal government required tribal lands to be divided among native individuals, with leftover land as prospective property for new settlers. Native Americans wanted to make their territory an all-Indian state, by the name of Sequoyah, but attempts failed. It was to be 1907 before Oklahoma became a state, the 48th in the Union, and named for the Choctaw "okla humma," meaning "red people," a moniker first suggested by Chief Allen Wright in 1886.

Oklahoma has a population of 3,642,361, and is noted for having the second highest population (almost 400,000) of Native American Indians in the US. Hispanic persons represent over six percent of the state. The larger cities, such as Oklahoma City and Tulsa, are distinct for their sizeable ethnic communities, such as Chinese, Vietnamese and Arabic.
